I'd say I'm very athletic and fit, but whenever I get into a 5 on 5 basketball game I become tired, my throat gets dry, I get cramps, and sometimes I even feel like throwing up. I drink plenty of water, and eat bannanas before games. Is it because I'm playing too hard? Or is it simply because I'm not fit for basketball?
Please give me some advice on how I can improve stamina in 5 on 5 games.
Why do I get so tired in basketball games?
there is alot of running in b-ball
Reply:1. You are not in shape.
2. You need to drink water and Gatorade the whole day not just before a game.
I play high school basketball so these are some things you can do. Run miles for stamina, run wind sprints for speed and endurance, and run suicides for toughness and discipline.
Reply:Sounds like you may have "high activity" asthma.
Reply:2 things come to mind. You are probably not in game shape. It sound as if you need to hit the weights more. The more muscle you have helps to offset you aerobic conditioning. Second, you are dehydrated. You need to drink water 6-8 hours before you play. I have my teams drink 3-4 quarts of water every night and another 2-3 quarts from morning until practice at 3:00. Also, quit drinking sodas. Drinking carbonated beverages nullifies all the water you are drinking.
And make sure you eat 3 meals a day. Good meals, not junk.
Reply:you shouldn't eat RIGHT before the game...
eat at least an hour and a half before..
this used to happen to me too...
if you drink plenty of water and jog for a while before you should be fine...
don't drink anything the first 10 minutes of the game though...
it may cause you to throw up.. =]]
hope i helped!
Reply:eat food 1 hour before practice or games or u will throw up. and start running a lot
Reply:you may say your athletic.. but are you used in playing in full court? keep on playing 5 on 5, u will soon get used to it and feel more comfortable playing it than the way you play 5 on 5 this time. just keep on running in long distance.. hehe.. and be sure to get a good warm up before a gme
Reply:eat less
you might have a slow digestive system.
If you must eat eat an hour before playing.
Reply:you need to jog(that's what they say) but i dont think its work
just like you my problem also is my stamina after 5 min playing i get exausted this reminds me about last summer i was the team captain of basketball team(i'm not bragging pls. dont call me boastfull)i was the leader in points, rebound, assist, block in our team their were last time our team is down by 24 in 15 mins believe it or not i made we almost win ,in the 3 min we are down just only by 5 but i almost collapse in the floor,so we lost,if havent with my stamina we gonna win championship
after i play everyday and then one time we play for 2 hours and i wasn't tired and my friends cant believe it i was running back n fort
so i suggest just play everyday and your staminawill get higher and also drink milk and vitamins you surely be aggresive
good luck!
Reply:you probably have more white muscule cells than red. (white is burst and red is endurance.) to increase red, you have to do long time exericise, such as cross country, or running for lond periods of time (there arer other exericise I'm sure that would help with this, look it up, increase red muscule cells look it up)
You can also help breathing and cardio with cardio exercises,
agility laters are my favorite of these (again look those up, cardio)
but everyone gets tired at some point, got to stick it out man, I'm in shape, and I still get tired pretty easily.
Reply:So you want to last longer in 5 on 5 games? Okay, here's what you need to do. None of these suggestions will tell you how to physically increase your stamina but they'll help get you to the end of the game still standing.
1) Determine whether or not you'll be playing offense or defense. Trying to play both will get you tired fast. Either choose to play defense by staying outside the 3pt line (near midcourt) while on offense so your run back to defense is shorter or choose to play offense and play near the 3pt line on defense so you can run out on a fast break sooner. I know this isn't what coaches will tell you to do but if all you want is to be able to last through an entire 5v5 game without falling over you need to pick what type of game you're going to play.
2) Playing defense takes A LOT more energy than playing offense. So to conserve energy while on defense, lag off your guy and don't try to deny him the ball (ball denial uses up too much energy). Let him take outside shots (if he's not good) and just concentrate on getting the rebound when he misses. Or tell your team you want to guard the guy that doesn't play hard on offense. That way you don't spend any energy at all.
3) Watch how your teammates play. Are they the type that runs out on fast breaks all the time? Are they good enough to finish these fast breaks by themselves? Don't bother running down the court when your team is on a 3v1 break. Also, are your teammate ballhogs? If they are constantly shotting the ball and never sharing it with you while on offense, then just settle back on playing defense and do what I mentioned above. Why bother running around picks/screens on offense, trying to get open or free when you never get the ball?
4) Tell your team to play better defense/offense. Let's say you decide to play an offensive game and find that your defender is denying you the ball and you have to spend a lot of energy trying to get free. Tell your teammates to set screens and picks for you so you don't have to run so hard. When on defense, if your guy keeps scoring on you over and over despite your best efforts to stop him, tell you teammates to do a better job of keeping the ball from ending up in his hands (make it harder for his teammates to pass to him the ball).
5) Choose your battles. If the other team is running and gunning at the beginning of the game and you match their level, chances are you're going to be just as tired as they are. But if you let them run themselves ragged at the beginning, you'll be fresher later and can easily exploit their fatigue (and trust me, a lot of guys play hard the first 5-10 minutes and quit after that). So if your team can pick up the slack for you at the beginning, you can lead a charge later on in the game when everybody else is tired. A fresh guy can score easy fast breaks late in a game where everyone is tired.
