How do I start running?

I am overweight and have very horrible stamina and endurance but have always wanted to run...what is the best way to get started? Be as specific as possible please.

How do I start running?
start walking and a light jog first for about 20 minutes. Jog then walk until you catch your breath and do it again and again until 20 minutes is up. Do that until you can start running a little longer. I was like that too when I first started off and now I can run 4-5 miles without stopping I just completed my first duathalon and its the greatest feeling. Good luck hun!
Reply:Start running, and see how far you can get before your out of breath. Then take a short one minute stop, and start up again. Then run for 2-3 minutes, then stop for 2-3 minutes. It helps with speed, and endurance. Then focus on how much running you can do without stopping.
Reply:i would go to a rural area and just run around lakes, forests, ponds, meadows etc etc.. run for 10 minutes first, then 20, then 30 etc etc. but make sure you can run with your doc. people have had hard attacks. hope this helps.

p.s.......try to take friends with you when you're running so you can encourage each other.good luck
Reply:I had the EXACT same problem. I was 55 lbs overweight and couldn't even run a mile (or even a half mile). I asked a friend the same question. He said, "if you are getting too winded, then you are running too fast." He told me to just slow down until I could sustain the pace without getting out of breath, even if I wasn't running much faster than I could walk. He was completely right. I started out by walking, but then just jogged slowly until I found a pace that I could sustain without getting out of breath. Within 4 months I was running 6-7 miles a day. Trust me, you can do it. Take it slow and set reasonable goals. Slow and steady is what you want. After you get your endurance up, you will be able to pick up your speed. Good luck!!!!
Reply:I joined 24 hour fitness where I can walk their indoor track or swim in their pool late at night. Also, I began with very short walks and routines until my body gradually began to get used to it.
Reply:i say you should start by walking or jogging lightly. set a goal for yourself for that workout. like....say you start out by walking a mile with the same pace. stick to it and don't give up. do that until it becomes a little easier and then you can increase your speed a little bit. and when that becomes a little easier you can increase your mileage.and so on and so forth. but stick to your goal!!!! don't give up!!! it's mostly mental actually!! if you tell your self your going to jog for a mile then don't stop and jog the whole mile. Most people are physically able to do it but it's all mental after that. it's gonna hurt. your gonna sweat. but when you know you did good and tried your hardest...you're gonna feel proud of yourself. trust me! you'll lose weight if your dedicated enought and if you really want to! and remember....DRINK WATER!! very important! eat right. veggies...fruits...NO SODA. it's bad for you =] GOOD LUCK!!!!!
Reply:don't try to do too much to start-out with. start slow, like with a fast walk and work your way up.
Reply:I would start walking first then build up to where you can run...

Interesting, someone gives me a thumbs down and most ppl here are saying start out walking then build up to running/jogging, interesting.........
Reply:jion ur skool (if u still in their) cross country..... if not just run a mile every day.. then little by little it will start getting easier and then u get better at it
Reply:Never seen the Santa Claus?? As the winter warlock says: put one foot in front of the other, and soon youll be runnin out the door-or-or... but yeah start out with walking and then walking at a faster pace and then build you way up to jogging
Reply:do a little bit as a time.

How do I lower my exercise age in Wii sports?

I am trying to lower my age in the exercise training section of Wii Sports, as well as increase my stats. My age was reported to be 80, even though I am 23. I received the lowest rating possible on all categories except stamina, in which I received one rating point higher.

How do I improve this score so that I am no longer embarassed of being a 23 year old in an old body? Is there an effective program that will essentially put me through physical therapy to begin the process of rebuilding my body from 80 years old to at least my 30's? I would really appreciate this, as you might imagine.

How do I lower my exercise age in Wii sports?
It just takes practice. The better you do the lower your age in Wii Sports.
Reply:That's funny. I notice that the Wii doesn't always respond to what you're doing, so you might have to time things right. Guess it wouldn't hurt to practice a little more.
Reply:i suggest you should keep on practicing.it helps alot.

also the exercise age just reflects on your current skill level.not your real age.
Reply:well im 73 and im really 15 and 20 is the is the lowest it goes so that would be like perfect so it doesnt really mean anything
Reply:Become better at the sports they make you do.
Reply:all of the events in wii fitness are available in the practice mode of wii sports too. try practicing the events so that when you play them in the fitness test, you'll do better and get a better age. Also, your age will go down the more you do the fitness test. As described to you in the game.

Why do you think the stigma is sticky?

1. Why do you think the stigma is sticky?

2. How many stamens do you see in your flower?

Why do you think the stigma is sticky?
The stigma is sticky so it can "trap" to pollen.

Most flowers have 6 stamens but a few have many more.
Reply:Stigmas are stick to attract bees, or any other pollinators. They are also stick so that pollen will stick to them and fertilize the eggs located below the stigma.

It really depends on the flower. For example, one flower may have only a couple stamens, but others could have hundreds. I have even heard of a flower that is either male or female, which is different than most flowers.
Reply:The stigma is sticky so pollen will stick to it as insects move in and out of the flower.
Reply:so the pollen sticks to it.

How do i stay fit for Cross Country?

I started running cross country this past fall season. i also play basketball in the winter and lacrosse in the spring. how should i condition during the summer to keep my stamina up for the upcoming season? how can i improve my time without overworking myself too much?

How do i stay fit for Cross Country?
you should continue to run in the summer.

You need to run 3 to 5 times each week.

1 or 2 days do a tempo run.

It would be a good idea to find a road race once or twice a month to stress yourself and work hard.

It is not necessary to run hard like practice but you must keep active and maintain your cardiovascular conditioning.
Reply:Fo sets of whatever u want like a set of 4 800 m. to get faster.
Reply:Just make sure to get an occasional long run in, and run frequently.
Reply:for staying fit diet is also a main thing its like you have to eat vegetable n drink milk n other nutritous stuff for good body n in summer for making up stamina wake up early in the morning n start rnning play soccer if u want this are the best ways to be fit
Reply:our cross country team has scheduled conditioning during the summer. see if ur team might want to do that as well.
Reply:Alright when conditioning for Cross Country you have to remember that the keys are diet, sleep and workout schedules.

Diet is pretty universal for everyone. Fruits, veggies and low fat meat products and lots of dairy and carbs. Pasta has a lot of carbs which you really need to perform at your best. Bananas have lots of potassium which is also really good for you. Don't be dumb and smoke and do drugs and alcohol. If you do those things then you obviously aren't ready to even think about taking on the challenge of being a competitive racer in Cross Country.

Sleep. You need to be getting the proper ammount of sleep every night so that way your body can re-charge and be ready to work hard again the next day.

Workouts. Your workouts will depend on what kind of shape you are in but you should be able to go back into the season having the ability to run 9 miles at a steady 8-8:20 minute mile pace. Before any workout you should do a nice easy mile as a warm-up with about 20-30 minutes of stretching. I cannot tell you enough how important stretching is to you. Stretch everything. Take the time to do it right or else you'll see yourself out for part of the season b/c of injury. After the first week that you don't practice you start to lose your conditioning exponentially. That being said let the workouts begin. Over the summer take 60% days like an easy 3-6 miles and on other days make your workouts more vigorous by doing mile repeats at 80% or race pace. Also do sprint workouts like sprinting 100 meters then jog back to the starting line and sprint again. Do this excercise about 10 times. Make sure you take one day off once a week so that way your body doesn't get totally worked out. B/c once you hit a certain point and don't let your body recover then it starts to break down.

Remember to push yourself. When running cross country your body is ALWALYS stronger than your mind is. It can do far more than what you could ever imagine if you let it. Trust me I've been there.
Reply:Most good xc teams will have summer practices run by the captains, so talk to them and see if they have anything planned, and if not, you should plan it, its a lot more fun and beneficial to run with others.
Reply:Yea! A cross country running lacrosse player! (I got a broken nose, chipped tooth, and scratched glasses from a tragic bball accident, which is why I don't play). Mark a route for you to run a couple times a week, and every so often, run some hills, up and down. Run on a treadmill, and on gravel, asphalt, grass, and the woods, so you are ready for ANYTHING.

Crunches, push-ups, striders, leg streches.........etc
Reply:Basically just keep running at least 3 days a week, and increase to 4-5 about 1-2 months before your first practice. Also do some light weight training etc. For workout ideas, use some of the same workouts you did for XC practice. Make sure you run 3-8 miles, a mix of "long" and "short" runs, with tempo, hill, and speed runs too. Mix up the workout, route, etc so you don't get bored.

I am a vasristy high school cross-country runner in the fall, and a varsity basketball player in the winter. This is what I do: in the 4 weeks between XC and basketball, I run sprints and work on lateral movement, etc, to prepare me for basketball. During basketball I run 1 time a week, if that. I hardly ever run on a day we have practice or a game, because I'm working hard enough in basketball. Then once basketball is over, I start up running again.

  • How to find good items in WoW?

I have this Shaman named Sindaran on Garona he's only level 9 but every character I've made was very crappy when it came to armor and attributes like stamina and intellect and all that stuff. I need like a strategy to get items that will make this character actually good. And if any of you can give me in game help that would be great.

How to find good items in WoW?
for one, i wouldn't exactly listen to people who say don't play it. you're fine as long as you don't make it your life.

    anyways

honestly, i would suggest NOT buying stuff from the auction house as you level. yeah, buying stuff every now and then is fine. but don't go to the auction house to see if you can buy something new every single time you level, especially blues. as you get higher, you're going to need that gold to train your spells, buy mounts, etc. if you waste it all on gear from the auction house, you won't have the gold. personally, i'd just wait til you got to the level where you can run instances for gear. blizz updated pretty much all pre-BC dungeons so even if you run a lowbie one you'll probably get a nice blue. i don't know if you're horde or alliance.. but if you're:

horde - wait til level 13 or so, and run ragefire chasm, or wait until 17 or so and run wailing caverns.

alliance - i'm not too sure on this one, as i don't have any ali. but i think the lowest would be wailing caverns at 17?.. or stockades? at 21 or so?

that is just my opinion tho =)
Reply:your best way to get the most premium stuff is to outfit yourself with all the best gear you can find from the auction house. i always ran dungeons, or had a higher level guildie run me though, got the drops from them and used the money from their sale to upgrade my stats. or buy gold from a third party site, and buy the heck out of the AH.
Reply:u will get better items as you go along and raid, but seriously i wouldnt start with that game, i got hooked and it took a lot to stop playing it. im not telling you what to do, just advising

How do i train my body to run longer distances?

i'm 136 pounds, 5'2" and 17yrs, so i'm not in the greatest shape, but i do like to run. i want to be able to run long distances and have lots of stamina, but where do i start? how do i know when i should increase the distance i'm running?

How do i train my body to run longer distances?
Practice everyday, run in your park for about 25 minutes. Do it at least 3 times in a week.

After a long practice, this will improve your stamina. SO have a good try. GOOD LUCK
Reply:Ok, first get your self a good pair of running shoes, then check on the Internet in your area for running group and if you don't have any around you. Take to the park, 1min run, 5min walk for a week say 3 to 5 times a week then 1min run 4min walk till you get to 5 min run 2 min walk in some weeks and from then on you build on the run and decrease the walk after months of training all the best you can also get alot of information from Internet say

    http://www.goodrunguide.co.uk/ and runners world website.
Reply:First, think about checking with a doctor to see what you may or may not be able to do.

Then, go buy some good running shoes from a marathon store or a sports store. Stay away from Footlocker and other stores that have a lot of basketball jerseys for sale. They focus on basketball shoes and won't have good shoes for running.

Next, practice running 2-3 miles in a single go. Run slow and easy and work on focusing with your breathing. After a month or so, your body will get stronger with running these distances. Then, work on 4-5.

Go to your local library and look at books on running. There is a wealth of knowledge available to you for free. Check it out!

    Good luck!
    Reply:run everyday,go to fitness.
Reply:I worked myself up to being able to run for one hour and a half, and this came from someone who would get tired running after the second minute. It took me about 8 months to be honest, I was training 6 days a week, i added a minute each day to my runs, and i also made sure i invested in a good pair of running shoes to be 100% comfortable. I also used to rotate every other week, to 5 min speed walks 5 minute runs for one hour, before you knew it months had gone by and I was able to keep running for much longer. Good luck to ya.
Reply:Just run - if you just want to be a long distance runner, your stamina isn't as important as the strength in your legs - the fastest way to increase strength and stamina is by forcing yourself - but if you don't want it that way, then just run for example 1 mile and increase every week for 500 m. If you can't increase for 500, try less. This way you will surely progress.

Also, keep your heart rate from 60%-80% for at least 20 minutes - that's for stamina

How can I build muscle/lose a bit of weight?

I'm actually quite spot-on as far as weight, goes, I guess. I'm 5'5" and I weigh 123 pounds. I have a skinny frame, I think, because I can overlap my fingers around my wrist. And I think I have an athletic build, though I could be wrong. My waist is at least 4 or 5 inches above my belly button, and my hips are about an inch below my belly button. I'm pretty small. 33.5" bust/27 or 28" waist/33.5" hip. I have a bit of flab over my stomach that I want to drop, and I want to build arm and leg muscle, as well as stamina. I'm in marching band, y'see, and since we have to hold up our instruments, I need some arm strength. We do pushups if we mess up, but I haven't had to do all that many, really. But I can't do pushups very well, and it makes my head hurt when I do them. I also can't do crunches very well. I can't even remember how to do them. I really want to get into shape, and I'm pretty good in the leg department (soccer). So what can I do?

My sister is disappointed at her 24th place in criss coutnry running. She wants me to help her run faster?

How can I help her run faster, and for longer with more stamina? Thanks for all answers!

My sister is disappointed at her 24th place in criss coutnry running. She wants me to help her run faster?
Practice, practice, practice.. Cross country involves a lot of endurance, she has to be mentally prepared for every race. Every practice should be 100%, it takes time to get faster. Make sure she does track during the spring, focus more on the 1600 and 3200 which is 1 and 2 mile. Good Luck
Reply:I've run cross country and track for 2 years in high school and I used to be one of the "slow kids". My coach really got me into shape though. It really helps your mentality if you know you're improving. She should time herself at the beginning of the season, when she knows she's out of shape.

Then she can start her training. Cross country is a difficult sport, and takes a lot of dedication. One of our workouts is:

-run your fastest mile on the track

-then without stopping after the mile, go run 2 miles off campus

-when you get back from the 2 mile, run a hard quarter

Make sure you time all of this, just so you know where you're at. It really helps build your endurance. You really learn to push yourself after the first hard mile.

By the way, you can contact me for a full work out schedule that should really help if needed, at DanielleDunmire@yahoo.com
Reply:The only way to run faster is ...... To run faster.

If your talking running over a longer distance then order to get a higher pace, speed work helps immensely.

there are many versions of speed work the most common is running 400 meters at high speed over and over again.

run 400 at an average light pace, maybe 10 minute miles, then sprint 400 at about 7 minutes, drop back to 10 for 400 then back up to 7 minutes, do this about 6 times. Ironically this doesn't really build muscle, but it gets your legs used to moving faster.

Other strategies include running a 75/25 or 80/20. that means run either 75% or 80 % of your run at a comfortable pace then the last 25-20 % at a fast pace.

Be careful to not do to much to fast, it will take a while to really increase your speed. Also when adding these workouts your chance for injury goes up allot, so stretch right, eat right and rest on your rest days.

For more info look up Hal Higdon's book entitled "Run Faster"

    it really helps.
Reply:Cross Country is hard, I would know I am in it. It is a lot about practice and at the meets keep a positive attitude and tell yourself that you can do it. What would be the best thing to before my swimming training session?

i have only just started after 6 years and need to build up my stamina?

What would be the best thing to before my swimming training session?
Run, Bike, and lift. Running will build up your lungs and work your Hamstrings and glutes and even muscles in the lower back are prime movers. Biking is diffrent. Even if you only cycle a few miles per day your muscles will feel and look stronger. The main muscle groups used when cycling are the upper thigh muscles (quadriceps); the backside muscles (gluteus maximus), and, to a lesser extent, the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus). And lifting will build up you muscle bulge. Also the runnign and biking will build up your lungs. As a year round swimmer i am always cross training to stay at the top of my game.
Reply:Any general conditioning program would be good, but swimming itself is a good conditioning program in and of itself. Just do it, as they say. Start off slow and easy at a comfortable pace. Gradually increase the time spent swimming; add in speed work only when you feel you are at a reasonably fit level. Concentrate just on building up comfort and endurance at first. My old swim coach always said that the best training for swimming is swimming, and I believe that too!
Reply:Any general exercise to get fit. Swimming would really be the best as it can be at your own pace and it works pretty much all the muscle groups. Apart from that, you would really need to do a range of exercises that work all your muscles, as well as cardio work to make sure you are completely ready.

Fibromyalgia complicates everything. If you have access to a swimming pool that would be your best exercise. anything else is going to cause you a lot of pain. If there's a chiropractor nearby they could help you with exercises. I'm enclosing a link where you can find a chiropractor in your area. I've also written an article on Fibromyalgia that goes over everything you can do for yourself at home. It's too large to place here so just go to the link.

I don't want to "let it out" (c*m) in such a short period of time. i wanna keep going.

How do I increase/ improve my sexual stamina?
practice kegels. next time you pee, stop mid stream. this may sting a little, but do it this one. pay attention to the muscles you use to stop the urine. finish peeing. any time you want, practice clenching and unclenching those same muscles. try to hold the clench for longer periods of time and do reps, much like you would to strengthen any muscle. these are called kegels. doing this will increase your ability to delay c-umming. check the link in the source section.

It may be emotional, meaning you're too excited and just need to calm down, or physical, in which case you need to practice self control by masturbating to the brink of climax, and then stopping, so you can bring yourself to the brink again and keep repeating. Eventually you will be able to control your excitement.

How is synthetic testosterone administered to athletes ( ie Floyd Landis) who want to increase stamina?

Testosterone can be taken orally, by injection or by use of a testosterone patch.

Cyclists don't discuss doping methods openly, but as recently as a month ago, a German doctor involved in cycling discussed the use of testerone patches for recovery: "You put a standard testosterone patch that is used for male hormone replacement therapy on your scrotum and leave it there for about six hours. The small dose is not sufficient to produce a positive urine result in the doping test, but the body actually recovers faster." --Dr. Kurt Moosburger

Im a frequent jogger with a very bad stamina.is stamina genetically determined? how can i improve my stamina?
Stamina along with other abilities appear to be genetic.

You can not make a world elite runner out of everyone no matter how hard you train.

However, you can get much better.

You should have seen improvement in less than 3 months if you are running at least 3 to 5 days each week.

Run easy, relax, just try to be comfortable and increase your distance 1 or 2 days each week.

Doing long runs along with your regular runs will help you adapt.

After a month you can start doing the long runs as your regular days.

You may have developed a mental block as to how far you can run without stopping so you should shock your system by running farther.

If you will continue to run when you feel like stopping your body should respond and let you keep running.

Run with others and talk about different things so you will not think to yourself here is where I always stop.
Reply:find your limits, and then push yourself beyond them. find the limit that you can't push past. stay straining against it for a while. once you feel better, push past it. repeat. it is grueling, but the only way to build stamina is by pushing yourself hard for a long time, as long as you can take it, and then some. stamina is part genetic, if you can not improve the way I suggest above, try re-examining how you spend your energy each day. Cut out the superfluous things. See if that helps.
Reply:when your running, make sure you carry a bottle or 2 of lucozade sport.

What is The Fastest way to train and attain Good stamina as well as speed for running 400 mtrs?

    run

What is The Fastest way to train and attain Good stamina as well as speed for running 400 mtrs?
    Try these

Speed Endurance, similar to speed or sprint training

Repetitions should last from 30 seconds up to 2-3 minutes as opposed to 5-10 seconds for speed drills.

Rest intervals between repetitions is reduced to prevent complete recovery.

keep sessions to 20-30 minutes maximum. Rest intervals should consist of active recovery exercises such as walking or jogging slowly on the spot.

    High Intensity Shuttle Run

Pace out 30 meters on grass or a running track. Place a cone at the start and at 5 meter intervals (7 cones in total).

Sprint from the starting cone to 5 meter cone and back. Turn and sprint to 10 meter cone and back to start. Sprint to 15meter cone and back to start and so on until you sprint the full 30 meters and back.

Rest for 90 seconds and repeat. Complete a total of 6 sets keeping rest periods to 90 seconds.

    Pyramids

Pace out 50 meters placing a cone at the start and then at 10 meter intervals (6 cones in total).

Starting at the first cone sprint all out for 10 meters and walk the remaining 40 meters.

Turn and sprint 20 meters and walk for 30 meters.

Turn and sprint 30 meters and walk for 20 meters.

Turn and sprint 40 meters and walk for 10 meters. Finally...

Turn and sprint 50 meters and then turn and sprint 50 meters again back to the start.

This is classed as one set. Rest for 90 seconds and repeat for a total of 4 sets. Rest for a full 3 minutes and repeat.

    Cruise And Sprint

Mark out a distance of 100 meters. From the start gradually accelerate to reach full speed at about 60 meters. Sprint all out for the final 40 meters.

Slow down gradually, turn and repeat.

Continue for 2 minutes and then rest for 2 minutes. This is one set. Repeat for a total of 6 sets.

    Hollow sprint

Set 5 cones out in 30 meters intervals. Sprint 30 meters, jog 30 meters, sprint 30 meters and jog 30 meters to the final cone.

Turn around and repeat always alternating jogging and sprinting. Work for 2 minutes and then rest for 2 minutes.

This is one set. Try to complete a total of 6 sets.

    Cross Drill

Using 4 cones mark a box 30 meters by 30 meters. Place another cone in the center of the box.

Starting at the center cone sprint to each corner and back in a clockwise direction. Once you have completed a circuit rest for 60 seconds.

Perform a total of 6 circuits to complete one set. A session could contain up to 4 sets with a 3 minute rest interval between sets.
Reply:shuttle run or beep test... like suicides.. since there is less time between beeps the longer you run it helps with your endurance as well as speed which is what you need for the 400

How to make sure i make the team?

I'm going to began working out with mi future high school team soon as i get my physical and i just wanted to know if any of you well experienced football players out there can give mi tips the only thing i know ABOUT THE Practice so far is we have to do sucicides so if any of you have suggestions on how to maintain my stamina and keep mi getting tired let mi know(other part of question)

How to make sure i make the team?
You wanna know how to make a team? Be first in line. Be the first person in every line, for every drill. Listen to the coaches, hustle, but be there, in front of them, first one there every time. They'll get to know who you are.

As far as stamina goes, start running now yourself. Do extra sprints after practice every night, on your own.

Will biking in any way get in you shape for running?

ie: will biking enough eventually increase running stamina? or do they work different muscles therefore making you have to run to get in running shape?

Will biking in any way get in you shape for running?
It will tone your muscles and help you increase stamina but you may take a while to adapt to running.
Reply:It might help to get your heart used to aerobic exercise.
Reply:Biking is a good workout to do on your running-off-days, it takes less stress on your knees.
Reply:They concentrate alot on your muscles based around your knee however i feel that cycling alot may damage you before running , try running on a tread mill at a slow speed then increase it a few notches up then keep increasing and decreasing your speed then do it for so many days and will get you in fitter shape for running , also have a hot bath before you run as the warm water relaxens muscles in your legs meaning you dont have to do alot of stretches.
Reply:The muscles that are used are similiar and biking will def. help get you in shape, but running is different and the pounding on your legs is a lot different
    Reply:its called cross training..

it'll work but not as quickly

    running will help you run

    not rocket science
Reply:it will help you in long distence running and hiking i know because i bike alot you should also run. running is tougher because you cant contenue on the speed that you have.
Reply:It tones the muscles and increases your stamina, but still may take awhile for you to adapt to running---it's a start, however!
    Reply:no
Reply:it helps to increase stamina and works basically the same muscles used for running. so.. yea it does.
Reply:you leg muscles will develop more.. you will have a more powerful stride

    your stamina will increase

you will be more able to run fast speeds for longer distances

you will learn to pace yourself

your breathing will become more suitable for running

It seems like you are asking two questions here, both of which are very interesting to me.

    Can biking increase running stamina?

Can you only bike and not run and still get into running shape?

    **The skinny**

Biking will increase running stamina. You can bike, not run, and get into shape to run.

However, if you bike and run, you can get into better shape for running than if you biked and did not run.

And interestingly, if you bike and run, you can get in better shape for running than if you ran and did not bike.

    **Biking constraint**

A challenge with biking is keeping your cadence and resistance up so that you are always working at a moderate or higher level of difficulty.

    **Biking only**

Given that you can do that, by doing biking only (and not running) the benefits to running include the following:

-you develop your cardiovascular system - your heart will get stronger and your lungs more efficient, as well as your entire vascular system will become more efficient in transporting gases, nutrients, and wastes.

    -you develop stamina = endurance.

-surprisingly, you develop speed in running. Biking can act like body building for your legs, especially your upper legs in both the front (quadriceps) and back (hamstrings). Increased strength, over time = increased speed (once you do start running).

Also, if you bike properly, focusing on the upswing of the pedaling motion, you develop hamstrings much moreso than if you did not bike. In developing your hamstrings, you become faster in the "paw up" portion of a running stride, which brings you close to the optimum leg turnover speed (if you weren't there already), and again, faster speed.

    **Biking and running**

The advantage to both biking and running include the following:

-you gain all the benefits of biking.

-you condition your leg muscles to the impact of running. You just can't mimic that impact on a bike, elliptical, exercycle, or Spin(r) cycle.

-you condition your muscles to the precise motions of running. Bicycling, well, is a cycling motion, around and around. Running is an up and forward motion.

Specificity kicks in here - you need to activate and train the specific muscles in the specific motions of a sport to do well in that sport.

-personally, I don't think you can maintain as high a heart rate bicycling as you can running. Which means that you can't strengthen your heart as much, or use your lungs as much, in bicycling as in running. So if you are running, you're getting into even better cardiovascular shape than if you were just biking.

    Regards,

    Phil

    ***A personal note***

Two years ago there was a stretch of 5 months when I couldn't run at all. To maintain fitness, I used an exercycle about 5 times a week for an hour or so at a time.

That winter, after using only the exercycle for about 2 months, and no running, I was still able to enter a half marathon and do fairly well. Certainly not my best, by any means, but a decent time nonetheless.

    **Another personal note**

I've been running many a year. This last fall I committed to doing a triathlon (happening in 4 days, now!). To prepare, I began Spinning(r), participating in Spin classes up to 3 days a week, 2 hours at a time, as well as continuing to run. (Spinning is using a special exercycle with a 30-40 pound flywheel, so if you do it properly you maintain moderate to high resistance throughout a workout).

One of the results I've experienced is significantly increased leg strength. My legs are stronger now than they have been in the last seven or eight years. This year I've been racing half-marathons, and so far the times are only dropping. With the triathlon coming on, I've switched moreso to biking.

Biking "with the big boys" has been more than I can handle. I've just noticed, though, that I can do a much harder workout, and not nearly as long, Spinning, than I can biking. Maybe the biking will equal the Spinning, over time, and provide equal benefits.

Paradoxically, I do know that going forward, it's going to be Spinning or bicycling functioning as the core of my running training. I will be relying on one or the other to provide me with strength (=speed), and just a higher level of comfort moving faster over long distances (i.e., half and full marathons).
Reply:The main muscle you want to increase for running and or biking is your heart and yes it will definitely get stronger from riding a bike. You will also be increasing your lung capacity doing either too.

In harvest moon more friends of mineral town; what does the negative ion bar the doc gives you do?
the best way to "get rid of it" is to put it on your shelves. if you don't have any then you can buy them from the tv shopping network (left channel) on saturdays. there's no telling when it will come up though. if you already have them, that's good because when you trigger the other blue heart events of the other guys, they'll give you stuff too and the stuff doesn't do ANYTHING for you but take up space. its just an entertaining event. but yeah. keep it on your shelves so you have room in your rucksack. and if you don't have a basket, you should buy one, then it really doesn't matter if stuff takes up space in your rucksack because you the basket holds 30 sell-able items. i use my rucksack to hold gifts for people and put my sell-able stuff in the basket. its more convenient.

How many other people would love to never, ever have to read another Yorio article about the NHL?

Its a total sham that she is allowed to call herself a hockey writer because clearly it is a sport she cares very little for. Her articles envoke none of the history, none of the traditions that make the sport so great.

She wants to have overtime capped at 2 extra periods because the players (who according to her are NOT warriors) might get hurt.

Imagine John Madden saying on an NFL broadcast "Those fellas down on the field better not hit so hard because someone might get a bad bruise" or maybe two Olympic runners holding hands as the cross the finish line because running is hard and they might get thirsty and dehydrated during a long run.

The Stanley Cup is the hardest and most glorious trophy to win because it takes and incredible amount of guts, courage, stamina, fortitude etc to win...If if just took skill we could give the Red Wings the cup every year. It takes traits that you find in the hearts of winners of triple overtimes Ms. Yorio

If you cant understand then ---

How many other people would love to never, ever have to read another Yorio article about the NHL?
she is bad. Just to spite her I did some research on that article and found out that only 20 NHL playoff games have gone longer than 53 min overtime. Thats like what 1 every 4 years on average. you should read her new article about how she makes an argument and then gets proven wrong. If only I could write an article about everytime I was proven wrong. The article is the newest one about how officials should stick together for the entire length of a playoff series. That is so absurd, I think the NHL would like to take referee's out of the game if it was possible. If they were there for an entire series they would become the third team in a series made for two. Can you imagine the hatred some player/fans would develop for referees over the period of upto 7 games.

Before I joined Y!A, I didn't even know who this lady was. It's not like Yahoo is my first choice of places to get Hockey news and opinions............

I agree with the people upstairs. She has written such ridiculous things that people are EAGER to see what she is going to say next.
Reply:I have read her articles and left my computer saying "what?". I think that Yahoo would be better left with getting some people who know the sport better than her. Cynthia Lambert, Tim Sassone or Eric Duchatek (forgive the spelling) are quite a few hockey writers who can go back into the history of the sport and at the same time understand the sport of today's hockey. Give Ms. Yorio a sport where it is chic to be at and has limited rules of engagement. I would pick Texas fold'em poker for her.
    Reply:nice rant..

How can I jog longer distances?

My endurance is terrible and it's very clear that I need to re-build it. I was sick for several years and I couldn't participate in the normal physical activity that I was involved in. I'm cured now and I was wondering what the best way to build up my endurance/stamina is. I can't even jog a half mile right now, it's that bad. Do I start with walking than build up to a jog? Do I just push myself? What is the best and healthiest way?

How can I jog longer distances?
Walking and cycling are good ways to get up enough endurance to run. I like cycling because you can go from very easy to extremely hard if you want to. Also, push it when you're ready take your time to become used to the exercise.
Reply:You need to do some resistance/cardio training. Next time you run, try running with weights like a weigh backpack. Or hit the threadmill and instead of running on zero elevation, raise the level up to four. You need to push yourself but don't over do it either.

Check your local gym for classes in resistance/cardio training.
Reply:I can normally run 10 laps non stop of a large football oval.

For me I found the biggest thing,is it's mental,so start off with 1 lap, don't think about the rest, then go for 2,still dont think about doing 10,then do 3 and so on,even if you only do say 3-4,make sure you walk, and run at times for the whole 10 laps.Your goal should be to run 10 non stop.

The muscles have memory,so if u push out as big a number of laps you can,say 7-10 non stop, then the next time you train say 2 days later, your mind will remember, your muscles will remember and your cardio endurance will increase.

Just give it time, and never give up.And please check with your Doctor before hand to ensure your body is able to cope with it before starting a new fitness program. As you don't want to suffer cardiac arrest or anything.

  • How can I jog longer distances?

Who are your top ten fighters in terms of stamina and endurance in boxing history?

Henry Armstrong- High pressure, non stop fighter. Never stopped throwing leather.

Harry Greb-Known as the 'human windmill' due to his constant flurries of punches and the always fast pace throught his bouts.Ernest Hemingway praised Grebs abilitys and stamina.

Willie Pep-Was always in motion, constantally moving and dancing from first bell to the last.

'Battling' Nelson- 'Bat' won many of his fights due to his remarkable stamina. This guy endured great punishment and just kept coming back for more.

Jim Jeffries-Very hard manual labor was the order of the day for Jeffries. In his prime Jim always stayed in peak condition (running, sparring, pulleys etc.) Described by many other boxers, writers and friends as having unlimited stamina.

Gene Tunney- Very underrated boxer ( a young Cassisus Clay borrowed many of Tunneys moves) Tunney was like a general going to war, always extremely well prepared and trained, Always moving, shifting, bobbing and dancing on his toes throught all the rounds.

Rocky Marciano- Could take alot of punishment, to get in close, and a heart that never said quit. Known for his hard workouts and stamina. Hit as hard in the last round as he did in the first.

Tom Sharkey-Powerfull and extremely durable. Fought Jim Jeffries once for 20 rounds and again for 25 rounds. Jim said of Sharkey how he kept kept knocking him down, yet the guy kept getting back up and coming back strong, even with three broken ribs.

Johnny Dundee- Always game, always moving fast and possessed great stamina.

Carmen Basilio- Watching his fights, the man did'nt seem to tire, throwing the same quick, crisp and sharp punches in later rounds as he did when fresh as in the first.

Whats the best thing to do about lung congestion?

I've had this congestion for a couple of months now-- my stamina sucks, I don't smoke ; what can I do? I just started essential oils aroma therapy--seems beneficial--any suggestions?

Whats the best thing to do about lung congestion?
First, drink lots of water. Almost all patients I see in the ER are dehydrated. A properly hydrated body will help thin out phlegm.

Second, Try an over the counter medication with guaifenesin in it. They are known as expectorant. The best known brand name is Musinex (pills) or Robitussin (liquid). Use as directed.

Third, hot showers are always good. Try to cough up as much phlegm as possible. You can take a cup in with you to catch it if you don't want to spit it down the drain.

    Good luck.
Reply:Drink plenty of water this will help to keep the mucous thin. Also, you can buy an over the counter medication like Mucinex (which is a mucolitic and an expectorant) and you could have someone cup their hands and clap them over your back (for a few minutes at a time) to help break up the mucous so it becomes easier to cough up. I hope this is of some help to you.

What do i do during off season to improve my shape for basketball?

im 13, and im joining senior high basketball because of my level of play. im wondering what to do during this off season to help me get into shape, get stamina vertical jump and what to do in individual practices

What do i do during off season to improve my shape for basketball?
Running laps or on a treadmill or around the block is a good way to get started with getting in shape. Short distance self-timed sprints help (i.e. place tennis balls a 10 to 15 feet apart and grab one and bring it back to your starting point. repeat. then when you have them all, do it again but put them back one by one. Running the ladder/tires/a chalk ladder is GREAT for footwork. Again try to time it. The quicker you are, the better you play. Lifting weights 3 days a week will also improve your game. For vertical jumps, try doing calf raises.

    Hope that helps a little.
Reply:just work out, dont do all that starving crap to get built you need proteins. Just build your stamina by running about 45 minutes a day and then do some pushups and situps. To improve on vertical jump you can do a series of things, squats, dead lifts, running jumps (with one leg/switch), mini jumps in place, high jumps, jump over cones. Stuff like that lots of aerobic will help.
Reply:plyometrics, ask your coach or just google it and you can find some online tips!
Reply:get in shape, just drink water, no pop and pretty much starve yourself. eat just rice almost like everyday. to get stamina just jump rope. vertical jump, i just ran down my road with leg weights on and made my legs stronger.

A healthy workout for my daughter and I?

I'd like to start a workout routine for my daughter and I. I am 31 and she is 8.

Something that involves a walk, some jogging and some type or aerobic and/or stretching exercise. I would like it to be a daily routine of about 4 days a week for about a half hour.

We are not overweight so this is mostly to get in shape and build some muscle, stamina and strength. The only problem area I see is my tummy in respect to fat. Everything else just needs tightening.

This routine needs to be healthy enough for both of us to do together. We also want to take the dog with us on the walks or jogs.

Would this routine also be ok for right before school? When would be the ideal time? I also have a toddler so I am trying to squeeze in some time alone with my 8 year old and to teach her the value of exercise and staying healthy.

What food would you recommend if this is a morning routine?

Also if you have alternative exericise methods like yoga, please recommend good videos or books for her and I.

A healthy workout for my daughter and I?
First of all, I commend you for teaching your child good health practices early. It will save her from the constant cycle of body image issues that most of us women face.

I have a 16 year old and since she was 5 we have been walking every day after homework and we bike a few times a week which is a great aerobic exercise. We had two dogs and they had no problem keeping up with us on the bikes. Since she is older now, we go to spin classes and to body sculpt for muscle maintenance. The Spin classes will take care of your belly with a quickness, by the way. Also, check out the gyms in your area, the better ones usually have great kids exercise classes and Some geared towards mother and daughter and families. You probably will also be able to get a free consultation with a professional who can give you great ideas!

    Good luck and Good health!
Reply:Swim or you can take a dance class together of do a dance dance video thats what I think
Reply:Keep in mind she is only 8! Children get bored easily. Create something that will be fun for her. Taking the family dog is a good idea. It gives you guys a slight energy boost and it will also give you alone time to have girl talk. If you are looking for a little more of a high pact aerobic exercises, you may want to try jump rope. It can bring laughs along the way if you turn it into a game . . . such as race to see who can jump the longest, or who can jump the fastest. . . and so on.

I would also suggest talking with your daughter to see what she enjoys doing. She may prefer bike riding. I personally think 4 days a week is a lot for an 8 year old. Keep in mind she has recess and P.E. at school. Make sure you excercise day does not land on her P.E. day. It's okay if you would like to excessive 4 days a week but you may want to do it without her. Also, start off slow. maybe start with 1x per week to see how she handles the change. Then move forward she maybe able to handle more. Always be sure to listen to her. If you want this to be a mom and daughter thing . . . don't force her to do it or it will just become a chore and it will result in no benefit and possible resentment.
Reply:I THINK AFTER SCHOOL WORKOUT IS PERFECT! BECAUSE IF U DO IT BEFORE SCHOOL,SHE MIGHT NOT HAVE THE ENERGY TO GET THRU THE DAY AT SCHOOL...TAKING THE DOG TOO IS COOL,A WORKOUT BEFORE BED WILL GIVE U BOTH A GOOD NIGHT SLEEP..AND YOULL BE ENERGIZED TO TAKLE THE DAY AHEAD.
Reply:Try cleaning your house to rock %26amp; roll music for 30 min. per day. It works for my old lady.

What's the best way for a very overweight person to kick off a weight-loss routine?

My sister is about 330 lbs. and asked me to help her lose weight by working out together. She doesn't look like she's over 300 lbs. at all and has quite a bit of stamina as she is still relatively young. I would love nothing more than to help her out in getting healthy, but I don't know much beyond "common sense" types of things.

What sort of work out and diet should she be on? She doesn't eat that much (that I know of) and just really doesn't exercise that much beyond walking around her college campus to get from place to place. What would you recommend? I don't want her to overdo it and hurt herself, but I don't want her to die of a heart attack at age 25 either :(

What's the best way for a very overweight person to kick off a weight-loss routine?
Walking is a fabulous way to exercise. Make it a goal to walk a couple of blocks every day. If she doesn't eat much, then maybe it's what she's eating. Cut out the calories slowly with dry cereal instead of chips (low cal and tastes good, plus it has vitamins and minerals... yay), lower fat milk, zero calorie soda (I find that the flavored sparkling water, if you find the right brand, is Really good, or you can get bottled water and those zero calorie flavor packs).

Identify the calories and find a way to replace them.

Walk. Every day. Even when you don't want to. Especially when you don't want to.

My mother recently lost over half of her body weight in under two years. She weighed over four hundred pounds, and she now weighs two hundred. She didn't take pills, get an operation, or join a fad club. She walked. And she changed what she ate.

    Best of luck.

Edit: as for not eating that much, I gained ten pounds. Know what it was from? Took me forever to figure out, but it was from six months of using cream in my coffee instead of two percent milk. So much for my little morning luxury.
Reply:has your sister ever seen a counselor or therapist? if she hasn't, you may want to encourage her to speak with someone beforehand, to determine if she has some form emotional attachment to eating.

If you feel that this may be an issue in her life, it wouldn't hurt to investigate this website which provides some great articles that address the failure rates of diets, as well as the flawed psyche of an individual who struggles with an eating disorder.

Reply:I gained 30 unwanted pounds after I got married and used "common sense" to try to lose it. Trouble was, I had NO idea what I should have been eating. I went to a dietitian who told me what I DID need to eat along with what I shouldn't. She figured up a plan based on my height, weight, eating habits and level of activity.

I spent $110 and everyone thought I was nuts, but it worked well for me. I've seen people spend much more hopping from one fad diet to the next. There is so much conflicting information out there that it's best to get a personal, professional opinion, IMO.
Reply:WALK. A lot. Miles a day. Up stairs. Through neighborhoods, Around the track, Do this everyday and try to speed up your pace each day. Record the time you spend walking or better yet buy a pedometer (thing you put in your pocket to record how far you walk) also, drink lots of water and cut out all drinks with any sugar in them. Good Luck.
Reply:taking the stairs instead of the elevators
Reply:Simplest start - go walking more.

It is easy, cheap and doable.

    25 to 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

Also, if you can, cycle around, take the stairs when you can.

I also have the 'solve stress with food' issue - and it`s hard.

However, after two weeks of regular walks, i already feel better :D.

It might help to have a hobby like digital nature photography, so you will have a purpose to go for a walk.

(Or city photography - depending on where you are)

I have found out that that helps too.. as i go out more, armed with my camera - and managed to make some very stunning pics in the process of losing weight .. ideal, ain`t it ;)

Feel free to contact me if you want to know more - or want to see the swan photo`s i`m so proud of :)
Reply:Ok, Your sister first needs to work out what weight she should be roughly. Remember the Body Mass Index (BMI), the measurement of heaight and weight is only a guide, not some thing that needs to be rigidly attained and stuck to. It is completely dependant on body type and what sort of foods cause your sister to put on weight or lose weight.

Your sister should start an accurate food diary and weekly weighing sessions for about 3 months. This will give her some idea of what causes her to gain or lose weight. Weighing more frequently can cause some people to become depressed as the weight can vary over a day.

She should start slowly. Ideally, if she can do it, an aquerobics class. These are 10 times more effective than gym workouts because the water aids the body and actually can make you work harder. One class a week for a month building up to 3 a week, if she can. She should go and see her Family Doctor first though, to make sure she has no health problems before starting to exercise or these could be exacerbated, if she has any.

As for diet. There are a couple of definate do's. She must have about 30gms of fat in her diet every day to help her break down the proteins in her diet. If she doesn't her body will not be able to break down the proteins and will start to break down the muscle. This fat can be in any form, from butter/margarine to cream. it's a matter of juggling the amount to what she is going to eat. If she's eating out one evening, she might need to save her fat allowance for this, otherwise, she should spread it throughout the day.

The other do, is beware of too much of anything, Pasta can be a demon for some overweight people. They believe that Pasta will fill them up and is a good thing to eat. The problem is that in some people, especially, those who are overweight, it can also sit, unwanted on the hips and thighs. The same thing goes for fruits and vegetables. 5 a day in any combination is great. Some fruits and vegetables are more likely to cause weight gain than loss though and these need to be worked through using the food diary.

Once you sister has completed her diary and recorded her weekly weights in the diary, for three months she will have a better understanding of what helps her lose or gain weight. Go with some of the common sense stuff too but do not be too rigid.

    I hope this helps you

  • What to focus on for a long hike?

Just wanting to know what i should work on for a hike. We will over 5 days be walking for 4 hours or so a day carrying backpacks with 5 days supply of food, tents, clothes, shoes etc (heavy). Should i do lots of workouts like running and jogging (stamina) or should i focus on weights (strength) to get me ready for the trip? Thanks.

What to focus on for a long hike?
Both wouldn't hurt. If you don't have hills in your area to walk up and down use the steps with your back pack on adding weight as you go--in fact I suggest adding slightly more than what you anticipate so that it will seem light (in comparison and prepare you for any emergencies, should you have to take on carrying extra). I don't think running would help as much as walking to build endurance because you will have to learn to pace yourself!!!Find some protein bars in advance that you like and keep them stashed in your pocket!!
Reply:This might sound kind of anti-climactic but you should just walk. Start walking about one hour a day for a week and then start adding weight in a backpack. Make sure you include steep hills in your walking route. Other training might help in certain areas but walking with weight on your back is the only thing that will help everywhere you're going to need it.

Is body building possible at the age of 40 ?
yes it does. There are so many people over age 40 and even 50s and 60s doing bodybuilding.

Checkout bodyspace.bodybuilding.com and make an account. It will change your life forever.I gurantee it.Dont worry about age.Bodybuilding has nothing to do with age.
Reply:You can body build at any age.

    :D
Reply:yes it is possible. They have classes so you are not going up against some 26 year old kid. Just harder to form the body as you get older especially if you havent been lifting as a means to stay in shape. But yes you can do it.
Reply:Absolutely it is. Most bodybuilders will not peak until they reach their mid 30s or so, so you've still got plenty of years left. Your muscles will not heal as fast as a young guy's while lifting heavy but if you diet and supplement correctly you'll be able to compensate. A 100% whey protein with low carbs (Optimum nutrition and Biotest are some of the best brands) after you work out is one of the best things for immediate muscle repair. Combine that with a casein protein at night to prevent catabolism of your muscles while you sleep and you'll be in good shape.

I recommend checking out www.t-nation.com for some bodybuilding articles. All the guys on there are very intelligent and dumb nothing down so its great to get raw, cutting edge information.

Running/jogging is the best workout for increasing stamina

Thus, you should start with slow and short distance

As time passes by you should start increasing your speed and the distance...

For example, you can run 1/2 mile in 1st week for 4mph for speed...

A week later, you can run 3/4 mile in 5mph for speed...

Just like this process, you should run depending on your ability...

If you are not used to running, start slow and short distance...

You should run/jog at least 20 minutes daily. It is better to do it at night before you go to sleep.

Remember, you dont have to sprint...

  • What kind of flower is this?? Please help! It's a love emergency!?

It's a purple flower with yellow stems coming out of the middle (those pollinated stems) I've seen it grow in San Francisco. It is pinkish purple with yellow stamen. It grows on a vine, on fences and stuff. Each flower is about the size of a quarter. Please help! It is my ex-girlfriend's favorite flower and I'm trying to win her back. But I can't find this flower or the name of it!

You really should take a picture of it because you'd be able to preserve %26amp; share your documentation of this unique phenomen...

I'd love to see it :)

    P.S. Why the thumbs down?

Is it normal for a peace lilly flower to have two stamens?
No it isn't exactly normal, but these things do happen with plants. Consider it a birth defect. It won't matter to your plant in the long run, it's just an aberration.

What are the harmful causes of excess of shagging.do we lose lot of physical power and stamina?

infact i want to know should i stop this habbit since i feel tired after doing ?

What are the harmful causes of excess of shagging.do we lose lot of physical power and stamina?
No. Why on earth would you think any natural process causes harm to us? You lose no power or stamina, except the temporary exhaustion brought on after orgasm, but nothing that's permanent. If you have sex repeatedly, in like a day's time, you may want to give yourself a half hour or so rest every once in a while to recover. Other than that, there is no power loss or stamina loss.

  • What is it that makes you able to have more stamina?

Running does, but how? There are fat people who can run all day but skinny people who can't run a block, so it isnt weight

What is it that makes you able to have more stamina?
The muscles in your legs get bigger from running becasue when your muscles are tired it's actually telling you to keep going because that is when your muscles will get bigger becasue the demand for them is higher. and "big" people could be mostly muscle! and skinny people could be just skinny and without much muscle. Then you get the people who are skinny and muscular from no work and those who get stronger from hard work. this may not've helped but i was kinda bored :)
Reply:ive never seen a large person run all day...

smoking has alot do with some skinny people

not being able to run at all..
Reply:you build enduarance training/practising - fat people do NOT have high endurance because they have to carry all that extra fat around all day long.

cardio, strength training and weight training and self discipline does help.
Reply:I have lots of stamina and i can t even run for more than 5 minutes but im unbelievably strong. Try drinking couple shots of hennessey, for about a week if you drink or what ever drinkyou prefer. where im from thats the last thing we would ever be worrying about we also have different drinks over here just for that. alcohol increases cardio strength ive tried it it really works. oh yeah and i smoke occasionally ehehe. and i still can walk miles and strength train all day everyday!

I do school track 5 days a week. I am an excellent sprinter but need to build stamina. How can I do this?

Also, what foods would I eat to do this?

I do school track 5 days a week. I am an excellent sprinter but need to build stamina. How can I do this?
run a half mile every day (not that long once ur used 2 it) and dont eat anything right b4 u run
Reply:To build stamina, your repetitions should be longer than the distance you race. A 400m runner should be doing repeats of 500-800. A 200m runner should do repeats of 250-500.
Reply:Remember this: Everything starts and begins with the 400. This is your stamina, strength. If you run the 400, even if you run in during practice this will help your 100 %26amp; 200 times come down, because you have the strength to finish. Most sprinter don't do it cause it hard, but it works. Hopes this helps.

Is there any track coach out there that could help me figure out how to break the world record for the 400M?

I ran track in high school, and the best time I have ever had in the 400m was 46 seconds. I see that I was just shy of the world record by 3 seconds. I was 16 at the time and now I am 29, but I think I can still break the record! I have the drive I just want someone who can show me what I need to do to work out all the right muscle groups and build stamina to run at my full sprint for that distance.

Is there any track coach out there that could help me figure out how to break the world record for the 400M?
It'll be a hard road for you. Heres what you have to do without killing yourself. You need to have at least one long distance workout a week (3-6 miles). It has to be hard but not killing yourself. You also need to have at least 2 repeat days. Ex: 10 300's at 90%. You will need to eat healthy and work harder than you ever had. Hit the gym for squats to maximize your explosion. Don't lose sight of your goal and have fun.
Reply:I don't mean to burst your bubble, but 3 seconds in a 400 is still a rather significant amount. You'll need an incredible coach...

Jeremy Wariner, the US's top 400 runner at the times is coached by Michael Johnson, who if you don't know, once was a world class 400 runner himself.

If you really want to break the world record, you're going to have to invest a lot of time and money into this, but if you're up for the challenge, then go for it.

To get noticed by a good coach, enter a national meet, like the USATF nationals (for info go to usatf.org). There will probably be some scouts there.

    Good luck... you'll need it
Reply:WOW!!! that is amazing, 3 seconds off You can join a track team, or talk to a personal trainer

I'm sure there are many of them in your area
Reply:Wow!!! At 16 you ran a 46!?!?! That is pretty amazing. I just turned 15 and i ran a 48 during school track and i hope to drop it down to a 47 during the summer.
Reply:The coach is Clyde Hart. He trained Michael Johnson and now trains Jeremy Wariner. He is basically retired from Baylor so he only trains pros. If you are capable he is the man you want.

Go to College, not Div I, try NAIA or Div III.

What happened? Jail? Injury? You would have had every coach in College drooling over you, so it must have been bad.

I've never heard of a 16 yr old running that fast. So it obviously strains my credulity.
