What to focus on for a long hike?

Just wanting to know what i should work on for a hike. We will over 5 days be walking for 4 hours or so a day carrying backpacks with 5 days supply of food, tents, clothes, shoes etc (heavy). Should i do lots of workouts like running and jogging (stamina) or should i focus on weights (strength) to get me ready for the trip? Thanks.

Both wouldn't hurt. If you don't have hills in your area to walk up and down use the steps with your back pack on adding weight as you go--in fact I suggest adding slightly more than what you anticipate so that it will seem light (in comparison and prepare you for any emergencies, should you have to take on carrying extra). I don't think running would help as much as walking to build endurance because you will have to learn to pace yourself!!!Find some protein bars in advance that you like and keep them stashed in your pocket!!
Reply:This might sound kind of anti-climactic but you should just walk. Start walking about one hour a day for a week and then start adding weight in a backpack. Make sure you include steep hills in your walking route. Other training might help in certain areas but walking with weight on your back is the only thing that will help everywhere you're going to need it.
