How can I jog longer distances?

My endurance is terrible and it's very clear that I need to re-build it. I was sick for several years and I couldn't participate in the normal physical activity that I was involved in. I'm cured now and I was wondering what the best way to build up my endurance/stamina is. I can't even jog a half mile right now, it's that bad. Do I start with walking than build up to a jog? Do I just push myself? What is the best and healthiest way?

Walking and cycling are good ways to get up enough endurance to run. I like cycling because you can go from very easy to extremely hard if you want to. Also, push it when you're ready take your time to become used to the exercise.
Reply:You need to do some resistance/cardio training. Next time you run, try running with weights like a weigh backpack. Or hit the threadmill and instead of running on zero elevation, raise the level up to four. You need to push yourself but don't over do it either.

Check your local gym for classes in resistance/cardio training.
Reply:I can normally run 10 laps non stop of a large football oval.

For me I found the biggest thing,is it's mental,so start off with 1 lap, don't think about the rest, then go for 2,still dont think about doing 10,then do 3 and so on,even if you only do say 3-4,make sure you walk, and run at times for the whole 10 laps.Your goal should be to run 10 non stop.

The muscles have memory,so if u push out as big a number of laps you can,say 7-10 non stop, then the next time you train say 2 days later, your mind will remember, your muscles will remember and your cardio endurance will increase.

Just give it time, and never give up.And please check with your Doctor before hand to ensure your body is able to cope with it before starting a new fitness program. As you don't want to suffer cardiac arrest or anything.

But ultimately fitness is good,so It's great your trying.

From one marathon runner to another (you)I know YOU CAN DO IT!

Just double check with your doc.

I was TERRIBLE at running, but this program gives you a structured way to build up endurance.
