My dad is a legal US resident, nearing 55 and he always wishes he could do something/anything to serve in any branch of the military, just so he could feel he has contributed to the war effort. Its his way of saying Thank you to America. He may not have the health and stamina to go for combat service but is there anything else he can do? He is good with computers. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.
Job opportunities in the military for older people?
Most States have a State Guard organization or State defense force (SDF) it's NOT the same as the National Guard but a whole different organization. The State Guards function is to support the National guard in times of war or deployment. In our State, they help with deployment paperwork, running the family support network, etc. etc. They are a real worth while organization. We drill one night a month in the National Guard armories for about 2 hours. We LOVE to have older Veterans join since it is structured the same as the US Army. He should check to see if your State has a State Guard organization. You don't need military training to join and it's not a US. Federal Government run organization. You are there to support the Troops and your State. You can check to see if your state has a state guard at http://www.sgaus.org
click on the "State Organizations and SDF links" to find out more. Heres a great story for your Dad. http://www.sgaus.org/StatesTNMemphisTrue...
Reply:At almost 55 he's too old to join the military so serving in combat is not an option regardless of his health and stamina. The military does have some "civilian" jobs I don't see why he couldn't get one of them.
Reply:If your dad wants to help, i would sugest he join the SeniorCorps. It is an organization for people age 55 and older, who are past the age limit for entering in the military. It is an at home opprotunity for people to help serve their country. It is close to home expierence for people to become mentors, coaches, or for someone to use their work/life experiences in projects and organizations. It connects people to their community using their skills and talents.
Reply:Tell him his support is much appreciated and the honor involved with his viewpoint is what makes America great. That in itself is a contribution.
Reply:Your dad is too old to be a recruit, however, he can still serve America by getting a government job that works closely with vets or the military in some fashion. Try www.usajobs.com. It would be helpful if he had a particular skill that the government needs. You can find out on that web site.
