I have been practicing my mile for 2 months and I still have it under 8 minutes and 30 seconds. I don't have very good stamina. I want to get my mile under 6 minutes by the end of this summer. What should I do?
How can i run my mile under 6 minutes?
Ok- what exactly is your goal? Is it ONE mile under 6 minutes, or to run, say, a 5k averaging 6 minute miles?
First of all, make sure you're being realistic. Some people (and I'm one of them) will never run a sub-6 minute mile. We just don't have the anatomy for it. And if you're shooting for a 5k at that pace, you'd be in even more elite company. I live in San Diego (ie lots of runners), and at a 5k last weekend exactly 31 people finished with under 6 minute miles- out of 806!!!
Not trying to squish your goal- just want you to be realistic.
That said- you should really do some speed work. Try to find a local running club that does track workouts. You can usually locate them through running stores. I believe the best thing you can do is find a coach that can give you honest feedback about what might be slowing you down (foot turnover, too much arm movement, too little arm movement, overstriding, excessive heel striking, etc). The least expensive way to do that is at a coached track workout.
You will need to teach your legs to move that fast, and that is done best with little bits at a time (200 meter repeats for example). You should also make sure you really allow yourself to rest after tough workouts. The workout is when you breakdown the muscle- the recovery day is when you allow your body to rebuild itself to be stronger. For most people, running everyday is a sure fire way to get injured.
Good luck!!!
Reply:The best answer is to keep running. Do not just run one mile and be done for the day, work on running every day for 1, 2, 3+ miles. As your milage goes up, so will your stamina. Once you become good at running/jogging long distances (with a good pacing and lots of water), tearing up a single mile in less than 6 minutes should be child's play.
Remember to stretch before running, and to drink lots and lots of water!
Reply:Go jogging early in the morning, from about...lets say 6:30 to 7:30, then in the evening, around 6:30 to 7:30. Do that everyday and each time, try and pick up your pace just by a little. Before it took me 12 minutes to go a mile, running, jogging, walking when I was out of breath, now I can do it in 6:30 by jogging the entire time.
Reply:You probably don't want to hear this but you'll just have to run more. There are only a couple things you need to keep in mind. Run loose when you're training for stamina. Go far. Swing your arms firmly when running hard. The more you run the better stamina and the more your body will get used to it.
Reply:do lots of distance and get a good base then mix in some speed because the mile really isn't that long and to get under 6 minutes you will need speed try to go with different goals also it will take a while so be patient(begining of 6th grade i ran a 6:19 mile end of 7th grade 5:05 so a m,inute 15 seconds in a year and a half with cross country and track both times)
Reply:Drink lots of water and eat at least one banana per day. Why? because if you eat the banana it balances your salt/sodium level and decrease your chances in getting a cramp. The water keeps your body hydrated and the more hydrated you get the more stamina stays within. makes sense?
Reply:If your running on a treadmeal start running outside. Run more every week. Umm well when i try to make my stmina better i go down into the splits and hold it for as long as i can which helps(you dont have to go completely into the splits!)
Reply:well currently i can get in under 6 minutes, just work out, run longer distances at a good pace, than you build up endurance, which helps you go faster in just one mile instead of the distance you practice(if this makes any sense lol)
Reply:if this is timed on a treadmill, then thats not good. Run 4 laps around a track and i bet you run faster. The reason for this is that the treadmill limits your stride, Where the track lets you have a bigger stride.
Reply:here's what you do.
Dont start having a SET goal.
go for a more realistic time.
THEN work your way through. till you reach the 6 min/mile goal.
Reply:practice....maybe different times of day would be better for you, maybe first thing in the morning or an incentive....if you do it...new running shoes or a new goal a mile in 8 minutes???
Reply:Keep practicing and eat healthy. Take vitamins. You are going to have to get good stamina to get it under 6 mins
Reply:run faster
Reply:run 2 miles everyday non-stop
%26amp; then when u know it, 1 mile will seem easy %26amp; ull be able to run it fast
hope i helped
Reply:eat healthy...run faster...water
Reply:practice practice practice..
my friend has done it in 5:55.
just keep running, you'll get it.
Reply:practice makes perfect! :)
