Will running help me to ride faster on road bike?

I want to ride faster on my road bike. I find that I lack the stamina to do so. I normally ride three times per week totalling up to 120km on roads with plenty of hills. My riding speed for 1 hour is 28km on roads with a few hills and I ride alone. Will mixing running with biking help me to go faster. How fast should I run 5km - at moment I can run 5km in 38minutes at best.

I am 52 years old.

Will running help me to ride faster on road bike?
i'd say squats would help some. when you adjust to that squats with weights.
Reply:Your best bet is to ride your bike more. Running only helps your cycling very very little. Likewise with cycling to help in running. I am a triathlete and thought when I first started that since I was a good runner cycling would be easy. I was wrong and found myself in lots of pain. If you want to get faster do some speed drills. Go at a faster pace for a mile than coast an mile. after a few miles you might be feeling the pain. I love running so I would never say don't run. It might be a nice change once in a while. But running will only make you healthy but not a better cyclist.

Good Luck

Reply:I cycling all my life and I do not racing any more . I do try to be in excellent condition but it is not eazy like 25 years ago . Today long distances self supporting touring is my pleasure and I do know what you talking about . Ride bicycle more often even short trips . Use lower gears . Have same load in panniers , it will help you to develop stamina . Everything is about the power , even cycling . More stamina , more pleasure from cycling you will have . It take some time to devolop more endurance and it is individual . But it is up on you . More older you are , longer will take . Running , swimming , gym and cross country ski will help . But remember one think . To start overexcercise in your age may will create more harm then good if you thing about stress to your body . Some people , maybe I am rare example still handle all this stress for decades in any weather condition and I never complained at all . So there is only one question how much longer ? I say , if you want to do , try do it ! It is worth it ! Just do not try to hard from beginning ! Little by little will work for you just fine before you adjust to this everyday sometimes hard exercise routine and I am shure of this . And don't be worry if it take 1 month or half year . You riding bike for pleasure so excercise same way . Now is for you to late start racing , but your fitness , riding and running time will improve and this count . Good luck !
Reply:I am sure running can help with your overall fitness. I find to ride faster, I practice intervals. I found out good workouts from Bicycling magazine.

Reply:Cross training is a good thing is most cases. It certainly can't hurt. But to get faster on a bike you really need to ride. McG mentioned intervals - that's a good training tool. Give this a try and see how it goes.
Reply:You can use running to improve your endurance which is an important factor in cycling.

I suggest you buy an indoor trainer to improve your stamina by pushing yourself a little over your limits while in the safety of your home.

Have faster cycling friends also. I always notice that I have an increase of performance when cycling with friends. I always attain my top speeds when in a chase or neck-to-neck that I never attain while cycling alone.
Reply:Running can will help with core strength and stability, but it won't do much for your endurance. I've found that the best mix is one or two long rides per week at a very easy pace, one shorter ride with hard intervals or a time trial race, and two days of moderately hard group rides or cross training. If I start pushing myself harder on the long rides, I get slower.

How fast you should run a 5k has more to do with intensity than time. It's such a short distance that you should go hard enough to feel pretty awful at the end.
