When you have asthma, how do you build up cardio stamina?

I want to be a runner, but asthma is really getting in the way; I get out of breath so fast. I've been trying to just run for short periods and then power walk to catch my breath. I don't use an inhaler anymore and don't want to, but once I breathe through my mouth, I go into coughing fits. It gets itchy in my throat and burny in my chest. My nose runs like crazy and I feel a bit faint. I know this must be a common problem, so how can I cope with this without just caving in and staying home watching tv. I want to be active and there's enough standing in the way of it before I count in the asthma.

I don't want to spend much money either. I'm just hoping there's a way to gradually work up to being fit without getting frustrated.

I have been an severe asthmatic for over 40 years. I can tell you the best cardio is swimming. Not only will it improve your cardio workout but it help develop breathing control and expand your lungs. You will be surprised at the change
