How physically fit does a race car driver have to be?
Most have serious workout regimens for cardio, endurance, and strength training and try to watch their diet. Some of them are runners. They start hydrating early in the week for a race, especially a long one in NASCAR. Even young guys like Kyle Busch can suffer in a car that is over 100 degrees for several hours in a firesuit and helmet, limited fresh air, and fumes, especially in July. Jeff Gordon and others have had to sit down (and some have had to get oxygen) following a long race. Racing at that level is mentally and physically demanding.
Reply:Surpringsly, they have to be very fit and very strong. When you're going around a curve at high speed, the g-forces really add up. You're not going to handle that well if you are an out-of-shape person with a neck like a pencil. As for training regimine, I couldn't tell you.
Reply:fordkid1 is right most these guys are in tip top shape. One thing that he left out is another reason for them to be in such good shape is the G force they have to with stand lap after lap.
The F1 drivers are probably hands down the best fit in the racing business.
Other than the umbrella girls.
Reply:They don't have to be in the best shape look at tubby Tony. Working out helps them with their stamina. If you read articles about Carl Edwards and Mark Martin they both say that working how improves their stamina tremendously.
Reply:In terms of muscles the arms, back and neck are the most important. You should go for a spin on a go-kart track sometime, and try it out for yourself. Even there you'll feel quite weared out after 10 minutes if you've never done anything like it before.
