How to improve stamina for basketball?

Basketball conditioning started (where you work out too become fit for bball season). I'm a freshmen trying out for the JV team. I am about 5'8", and I'm always in a gym practicing my shooting. But I never usually play 5 on 5 games, so during practice I became tired after only 4 minutes in a practice game.

Is It because i'm not fit enough? Something to do with my diet?

please give me some good excercises to imrpove my stamina for bball.

5 on 5 is much harder than playing 1 on 1 or even 3 on 3. It sounds like you haven't really worked on your running. Before you shoot every day, run laps or suicides. Work on your footwork so you will be able to get down the court fast.

Maybe get some friends together and play practice games before conditioning. It will help your stamina and you won't be pressured.

There will be things that will be harder, like full court and man D. Just keep trying.
Reply:When I coached basketball. The best way I could get my team in tip top shape..... is to do wind sprints... Stop and go then side steps. Do one min drills resting thirty seconds... You will get in shape wthin a week.. Good luck... Grant M in Pennsylvania
Reply:Try doing sprints. Time yourself while doing them. If you dont have a court near by try running on the side walk and at every other light post walk. Walk one and then run one.
Reply:start running ...

you can start with a 400 m lap ... take a pause ... breathe deeply through your nose with your mouth shut ... then take another lap ... increase the number of laps slowly and the distance covered in a lap slowly..
Reply:Cut the sugars out of your diet and eat allot of protien foods. Get a low fat low carb protien shake.

I always liked running to build up my endurance. Bike riding long distances is good too.
Reply:Run and jump rope.
