im a jr in high school and i want to join spring track. im extremely fast but i have 0 stamina. i can barely run a 400 but my 200 is good. i want to be a great sprinter what should i do? some people say to run long distance so the race seems shorter and others say run shorter. wich one is it?
Im joining track in the spring for the first time and i need some advice?
Who says you do not need stamina for sprinting, you need but now as much you need to do at least 2 days of long distance runs, also do a lot of abdominals. If you start doing more long distance runs you can do a 400 because for high school track they want you to be able to run 2 to 4 events hence why you should have some endurance. I'm a long distance runner but sometimes I had to run 200 or 400s and even if I was not fast my endurance sometimes helped me be better than other sprinter who go tired. So eat right, drink water, do 2 long runs a week, do interval workouts at the track and lift weights
Reply:You need to first get a good foundation by running distance - maybe 20-30 min (working on your heart and lungs). Start running around your neighborhood or on a track. Stretch and recover, drink lots of water every day. You can transition as you're running into short sprints and then slow and easy to recover -(interval training). As you get stronger- run some hills too and sprints. Begin building a solid foundation now - working on your endurance and maybe the 400m will be your race!
Reply:Need advise? That's why you have a track coach. Ask him/her
exactly what you're asking here. My (humble) advise is to get into condition first to build your lung capacity and generally tone those muscles. You could Run / walk 2-3 miles daily pre-season. When you're in decent condition ," repeats"
would be good;like several 200's in 30 sec and several 300's around 45 sec., with short rest in between. Good starts are very
important in the sprints; practice this daily, with an occasional gun start, going 30-40M each time. Don't limit yourself to running. If you're really that fast, you should do well in the LJ %26amp; TJ, these are sprinters' events. Feel adventurous? Try the hurdles too.
It's a misconception that sprinters don't need to be in good condition. In the big meets you might have to run trials, quarter , and semi finals for one event and do a jumping event in between ,and probably a relay too. Above all, be patient , asd don't be overconfident ; training is not always fun. Good luck, do well.
Reply:obviously, your a sprinter..
so dont do long distance, just practice on short runs ad sprints and running the 100 and 200 ONLY. you dont really need stamina for sprinting...
:) hope i helped.
im a sprinter too. and im on the high school track team. hah.
ohh another thing, lift weights with your legs, that will help build muscle and strength.
